Longford Gas Explosion: RapidMap Data Capture Case Study

The Longford Gas Explosion occurred on the 25th of September 1998 in Victoria, when a major pressure vessel in the gas refining process (a heat exchanger) broke open. This in turn, caused massive explosions and triggered fires throughout the states main gas plant. It took two days to distinguish all of the fires, the last being put out on the 27th of September.

The impact of this incident was wide felt. In human terms, it claimed the life of two workers and injured eight others. The incident halted gas supply to to all of Victoria and parts of New South Wales and South Australia. It severely effected domestic, commercial and business gas supplies for two weeks, affecting over 1.3 million households and 89,000 business'.

Below is a detailed case study of the incident and how in a spatial context RapidMap were involved. The disaster meant that RapidMap needed to create a solution, designing and executing a data capture methodology suitable for the collection of forensic evidence and to provide the data in a universal format, to be presented in a Royal Commission and to the Coroner's court.

This process was to be completed in under 72 hours and provided in a user-friendly format, so persons of any technical level would be able to access and understand the information
